Last Sunday saw the finals day played out to find this seasons Men's Handicap Singles Champion and what a final it was!!.
Earlier a random draw to decide the quarter-finalists saw Artem Chesnokov easily account for Allan Moyle, as did Bruce Williams for Andrew Lamont in the lower half of the draw.  Odie Walter stayed ahead all the way in a win over John Thompson,  while in the tightest of the Quarter finals, last years defending champion drew level with one end to go against Scott Harrison and managed to take the win on the last.
Again in the semi-finals Chesnokov made no race of it against Williams while the other semi-final saw another tight game, with Walter staying ahead with Kirwan slowly gaining.  Kirwan missed some chances in the later ends to level, including an ultimately cruel small movement of the jack on the 17th end which denied the chance for Kirwan to again go level with one end to go. This time it was to be Walter winning with a two on the last to go through to the final.
The final in front of a growing and appreciative crowd saw Chesnokov settle quicker than Walter and open a small lead.  Walter however stuck to task to bring it level at 10 all .  By now both the 2nd year bowlers were beginning to feel the tension.  Chesnokov again opened a gap over the middle stages to hold a 16-10  lead with three of a regulation 18 ends to go.  Walters closed with excellent bowling, scoring 3, 2 and 1 over those three ends to level the scores.
To sudden death - the first end saw Chesonkov put in his first bowl nearly touching the jack.  Walter chose to drive at the head, finally getting a result after three attempts, killing the end.
To a second sudden death end,  Chesnokov again drew well to hold the shot.  Walter with one bowl left, drove and managed to take out the shot bowl from a deflection to hold the crucial shot bowl to take the win in one of the most tense & exciting finals seen at Balmoral in some time.

Congratulations to both the new champion Odie, and to Artem  for the quality of bowling displayed in the final and across the day, one of those times its a shame there can only be one winner.
