Last Sunday the semi-finals and final for the 2016-17 Men's Pairs Championships were played. The semi finals saw Artem Chesnokov & Scott Harrison vs. Odie Walter & Matt Johnson and Roger Gardiner & Rex Bell vs. Warren Tritt & Steve Kirwan square off to meet to the final. The Johnson pairing made no race of it in their semi with the Harrison pairing, getting out off the blocks to an early 9-1 lead and were never headed when the concession came in the 13th end leading 14-4. The other semi final was a complete contrast, with the match a tight tussle and all square at the 13th end. With the Kirwan pairing holding the mat, they put on a single point in the 14th and 2 points on the last to make it through to the final. ![]() The final saw the the Kirwan pair turn the tables initially, getting out to a 7-1 lead by the 6th end. From here the Johnson pairing lifted their game and pulled back to within 2 points after 8 ends and then overtook the Kirwan pairing to lead 11-9 after 13 ends. A tight 14th end saw the jack move away from the Kirwan bowls holding shots to give the Johnson pairing a single, who then closed with two on last to win 14-9. Congratulations to Odie and Matt on a day where a really high standard of bowls was displayed by all finalists. 2016/17 Mens Pairs Champions Matt Johnson & Odie Walter |
